Through January 2022, we’re profiling the artists who have contributed to the Sounds of Southampton Vol 2. Today, we meet Muru

SoCo: Hi there, Could we start with you telling me your name, and the name of your track please?

Muru: Sure, I’m Muru and my track is called The Flow

SoCo: Fantastic, thanks. So – what have you learned through being involved in the project?

Muru: I’ve learned that networking with other artists is key to gaining more exposure and bringing more unity to the Southampton music culture.

SoCo: Totally, we can more together for sure. And so how has being part of the project has helped you express yourself through your music, or develop your music?

Muru: It enabled me to try something different, something out of my comfort zone. I’m probably one of the older ones out of all the artists on the album and for a long time I’ve mainly stayed on hip-hop/grime. When I got the chance to be on the album I decided to put something on there that’s a bit different to what I usually stick to. At the same time, I wanted to be able to express myself as an artist and I’ve had good feedback, so my development is me being a bit more diverse.

SoCo:  That’s great, I’m really glad it gace you that opportunity. Has this project had any other impacts on you, your wellbeing, your emotional state?

Muru: Yeah. It’s brought more positivity to my mind knowing that Southampton is really trying to do more for local artists. I have more faith in releasing new music now.

SoCo: Brilliant, thats brilliant. So has the project helped you feel more focused, more motivated?

Muru: Yes, I’m definitely more focused and motivated to put out my music.

SoCo:  What other thoughts or ideas or feedback do you have about the project as a whole? Anything?

Muru: I’m really happy about the project and grateful that we get to be interviewed. I felt that’s one thing that was missing for some of the artists, a chance to speak more on their thoughts and get to know them/their story more.

SoCo: Really happy to provide that. If there’s anything we can do to help, just let us know. And now – what will your next step be?

Muru: I’m going to keep making music, collaborate more with local artists, release the video for my song off the album and hopefully get to a stage where I can start making a proper income through my music.

SoCo: We can’t wait to see and hear all of that! Just let us know and we’ll so what we can to share it onward for you. Thanks for taking the time to talk to us!
